Let’s face it, it can be hard working from home and especially during this time. Trying to complete deadlines all while looking after a family member. There are many distractions with working from home but today I am going to share with you my top tips on how to create a loving balance between work and life.
Create a routine
Creating a routine is a great step in the process. Establishing your work hours can set you up for success. By setting your work hours, you know that you have to be in your office working during those hours. It is like going to a workplace during your set work hours. Forming this schedule at home is a great way to identify work from home life. It can be easy to not set alarms and not have a set schedule but this doesn’t work out in the long run. You are setting yourself and your business up for success by making your work routine.
Space
Having a dedicated space for your work is key to avoiding distractions and helps keep you focused on your work. You could do this by turning a spare room into your office, or use another suitable area created into a workplace, or use an already established office but changing it to suit your needs. Ensuring that you have everything you need in your office.
Make lists
Something that I highly recommend is creating your to-do list for each day. It can be done by writing down each individual task for the whole week then identifying what tasks you need to do each day. By using a notepad or online app such as Asana it can be used to organise your task list, include notes, deadlines etc which takes it out of your mind!
By having a complete task list you will find yourself being more productive throughout your day and see how many tasks you have completed by ticking the item off your list.
Set boundaries
It’s important to set boundaries around your work and life and to make them separate so they don’t overlap. This can be done by creating your set work hours and informing your family that during this time you will be working and are not to be disturbed. Then once work is finished for the day you will be able to give your family your full attention. You’ll be more present in both situations, which creates a great work-life balance.
Allow time for interruptions
Unfortunately, some days don’t go to plan and you may find disturbances that take you away from your work, like no internet connection or a family emergency. Make allowances for interruptions to your day, by either blocking out additional time in your calendar or making up for lost time in the early morning or evening, whatever suits you best.
Disconnect
When you are finished work for the day, it’s really important to disconnect from all your devices to ensure that you are there at that moment and not being distracted by work or checking your emails at all hours. I highly recommend putting your phone away during certain hours of the night. By doing this you will not be distracted by your phone and you will be more present.
Take care of yourself
Between work and life sometimes we do forget to take care of ourselves. It is important to check in with yourself throughout the day and block out times to go for a walk or out for lunch. Set time in your routine to get out of the house and make time to do what you love.
It can be easy to push through your day without stopping. Your mental health is important and key to be able to carry out your work. By setting these boundaries between your work and life you will make a nice balance.
