5 ways to get ahead in business with an OBM

When you run your own business, things move faster and faster every day. And when you’re juggling business operations with everyday life, it feels impossible to get ahead and stay ahead in your business. But for savvy entrepreneurs, engaging an online business manager (OBM) has been the key to getting a competitive edge in business and the breathing room they need for life.

An OBM is like a behind-the-scenes partner for any small business owner. We stand beside you, giving you the support and tools you need to propel your business forward and get ahead in this ever-changing world.

In this post, I’ll share 5 ways I can help you get ahead in business as your OBM.

1. Getting your business foundations in place

Every small business needs strong foundations to support its growth and prosperity. Without them, getting ahead is like an unachievable dream. Just like a skyscraper needs solid footing, your business needs solid grounding to help it stand tall. But in business, we’re not talking about steel and concrete. We’re talking about these 7 essential small business foundations:

  • Branding
  • Services
  • Website
  • Marketing
  • Networking
  • Business profile
  • Business Processes and systems

When you work with me, one of the first things we’ll do together is assess your small business foundations. We’ll check to see where you’re at, and if any of your foundations are a bit wobbly, I’ll help you develop a workable plan to make sure you have that unshakable base you need to get ahead in your business.

2. Setting and achieving quarterly business goals

You can’t get ahead if you don’t move ahead. But sometimes, the road forward seems too big and overwhelming. That’s why I love working with quarterly goals. When you break your long-term business goals into several shorter-term targets, you move ahead more efficiently with a systematic and sustainable way to achieve your long-term vision.

But let’s be honest. How often have you set yourself a business goal, only to get so busy with client work that you never take the time to achieve it? (I see you nodding your head!) It’s such a familiar story. Because to achieve a goal, we need accountability. And accountability is where my most powerful OBM magic happens.

Once we’ve set your quarterly business goals, we’ll devise a practical and measurable plan to get them done. Depending on what works for you, we might set up regular accountability calls to ensure you’re getting things done and iron out any issues. As your OBM, I’ll be there to help monitor your progress, ensure you’re on track, and offer workable solutions to clear any blockers to your success.

When it comes to getting ahead quarter by quarter, I’ll help you figure out your business goals and be there to make sure you achieve them.

(And if you’re not ready to work with me as an OBM on an ongoing basis, but love the idea of working on quarterly business goals, check out my Quarterly Business Planning Session. It’s an easy and affordable way to start getting ahead in your business, one goal at a time.)

3. Managing your team

Getting ahead in business isn’t just about strategies and systems. It’s also about people. A well-managed team can make all the difference in achieving business growth. (And a poorly managed team can lead to stagnation and decline.)

But managing a team is draining. It takes time, patience, and perseverance, which can be hard to come by when you’re busy with your own work. You love your team, but keeping on top of what they need from you seems impossible without help.

As your OBM, I’m here to help you with everything from onboarding to task delegation to  regular check-ins on progress and building team cohesiveness. I’ll take the team-management reigns to ensure everyone’s on the same page and the team operates like a well-oiled machine.

With clear lines of communication and one less thing on your plate, everyone will know what they need to do to keep the business moving with momentum and a shared desire to make things happen.

4. Planning for productivity

Getting ahead in business means knowing the importance of productivity. Time is a finite resource, and working harder in a misguided effort to ‘make more time’ only leads to burnout and the loss of productivity.

As your OBM, I’ll help you take control of your time. I’ll audit how you’re spending time now and help you with efficient tools, methodologies and ways to optimise tasks so you’re working smarter, not harder.

We’ll look at things like task prioritisation, time management techniques, project management tools and skills development to ensure every minute you spend on your business is helping you get ahead. We’ll also hold reviews to make sure you’re happy with how things are going with your productivity and see if we need to change anything that might be blocking your progress.

Productivity is about doing what matters more efficiently. Getting it right is like setting your business on a fast track to success. And when you’re more productive in your business, you’ll have more time and energy to spend away from it.

5. Streamlining operations

When your business operates smoothly, you have happier customers, happier staff and a happier you! Streamlining operations is like choreographing a well-timed dance. It brings the right processes and systems together with the grace of a masterful magnum opus ballet. And choreographing operations is what I do best.

As your OBM, I’ll bring a fresh and holistic view to your business and the tactical expertise to help you implement robust processes and systems. With a continuous improvement approach, I’ll look for ways to reduce bottlenecks and improve workflows. I’ll also look for opportunities to use technology and automation to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Once we have the right processes and systems in place, we can make the entire business machine work efficiently and harmoniously. Streamlining your business operations reduces problems, improves response times and helps you succeed.
